- Jeera or cumin seeds
- Garlic cloves
- Black peppercorn
- Shallots
- Tomato
- Murungai keerai (moringa or drumstick leaves)
- Moong dal and Toor dal (lentils)

Instructions for making drumstick leaves soup
Here are the step by step instructions of how to make the soup. I usually make this recipe in the instant pot. However, if you want to make this recipe on a stovetop pressure cooker, you can totally do it.
Instant Pot
- To the instant pot in saute mode, add cumin seeds and garlic to to the hot sesame oil. After the raw smell of the garlic goes away, add shallots, tomatoes and peppercorn.
- Also add in the lentils and saute for a couple of minutes. Add water, salt and pressure cook for 7 mins. Once the pressure is released, open the instant pot and add in the drumstick leaves and let it come to a boil in saute mode.
- Now strain the soup and grind the strained ingredients on a mixer and add it back into the soup. Add in lime juice, adjust the salt and pepper to taste and serve hot.
- You also have the option of adding in chopped cilantro leaves as a garnish.
Stovetop pressure cooker
The method of making the murungai keerai soup is the same for the pressure cooker. However, the cook times vary. After adding water and salt, you need to pressure cook on medium flame for 10 mins and let the pressure release naturally.
Stovetop Method
- To the hot sesame oil in a pan, add cumin seeds and garlic to to the hot sesame oil. After the raw smell of the garlic goes away, add shallots, tomatoes and peppercorn.
- Also add in the lentils and saute for a couple of minutes. Add 4 cups water, salt and cover and cook for 30 mins. Once the lentils are cooked, add in the drumstick leaves and let it come to a boil on a medium flame.
- Now strain the soup and grind the strained ingredients on a mixer and add it back into the soup. Add in lime juice, adjust the salt and pepper to taste and serve hot.
- You also have the option of adding in chopped cilantro leaves as a garnish.
Substitutions
If you're looking to make an easy and healthy instant pot drumstick leaves soup, there are many substitutions that can be made to the traditional recipe.
- Shallots can be swapped out for sweet onions in order to add a subtle sweetness.
- Tomatoes can also be substituted with canned tomatoes or tomato paste depending on what flavor profile you wish to achieve.

Ingredients
- Sesame oil 1.5 tbsp
- Cumin seeds 1 tsp
- Garlic cloves 3
- black peppercorn ½ tsp
- Shallots 2 - 170 gm
- Tomato 2 - 80 gm
- 2 handfuls moringa leaves
- Moong dal lentils 1 tbsp
- Toor dal lentils 1 tbsp
- water 3 cups
- Salt 1 tsp
- lime juice 1 tsp
Instructions
Making in Instant Pot
- Separate out the moringa leaves from the stalk, wash and drain them thoroughly and keep aside
- Set to saute mode in the instant pot and add 1.5 tablespoon of sesame oil.
- Once the oil is sufficiently hot, add cumin seeds, garlic cloves and saute till the raw flavor of garlic goes away.
- Add shallots and saute till golden brown.
- Add in tomatoes.
- Add in the washed moong dal and toor dal lentils and saute for 2 mins
- Add water and salt and close the lid of instant pot.
- Pressure cook for 7 mins on high.
- Let the pressure release for 5 mins and then quick release.
- Once the lid is opened, change to saute mode in the instant pot and add in the washed moringa leaves and let it boil for 10 mins and turn off the instant pot.
- Now strain the ingredient of the soup through a sieve and grind the ingredients collected in the sieve on a mixer with a little soup water.
- Pour the ground wet mixture of the ingredients and the moringa leaves from the mixer to the soup and stir well.
- Add in the lime juice.
- Adjust salt and pepper to your taste and liking and serve hot.
Notes
I have made this recipe in an instant pot. However, you can always make it in a pressure cooker or stove top.
